Radio controlled helicopters area also known as "RC Helicopters," are classified as model aircraft. However are noticeably different and distinct from Radio Controlled airplanes, due the way they are compiled and their construction, and flight capabilities.
These types of models, are used primarily by people who are engaged in this activity, remotely flying the helicopters remotely, as a hobby. They are also widely used in Hollywood, as a film prop, to portray them as a real helicopter in film or television.
Some companies that make these types of helicopters, specially make them for that use, photographic, etc. These helicopters contain many exact model parts, as their larger peer helicopters do. They are regularly used in various competitions around the country with strict guidelines in place for in flight stunts and aerobatics, set for by the FAA.
The demand and popularity of these helicopters have grown substantially in the last decade. Most of these types of helicopters employ a four channel radio, but there are some that have a two channel radio.
There are other types of these helicopters that are called, collective pitched models, these typically employ radios with five channels, most however have six channels. These types of helicopters have a few different types of power sources.
Gas powered, some by electric batteries, gas, and petrol. Of late many more of these helicopters are powered by electricity. These electrical powered helicopters have proven to be much more efficient then the other types, and that is why their use is becoming more the norm.
